The symptoms of eating disorder vary with their types and they range from mild to life-threatening. Distorted body image is the most bewildered symptom of eating disorder.

Anorexia Nervosa

The symptoms of anorexia nervosa are thin appearance, fatigue, abnormal blood count, fainting, constipation, dry skin, brittle nails, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, menstrual irregularities, bone less, dehydration, loss of menstruation, and hair fall.

The emotional and behavioral symptoms of eating disorders are excessive exercise, preoccupation with food, difficulty in concentrating, refusal to eat, lack of emotion, and denial of hunger.

Other possible symptoms include weighing food, skipping food, excuses for not eating food, wearing baggy clothing, complaining about eating fat, always eating foods with low calories, and frequent checking of body weight.

Bulimia Nervosa

The symptoms of bulimia nervosa are damaged gums and teeth, bloating, dry skin, fatigue, abnormal functioning of bowel, irregular heart rhythms, bloating, sore throat, swollen salivary glands, dehydration, sores or scars on the hand, and menstrual irregularities.

The behavioral and emotional symptoms are self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, constant dieting, eating till they feel discomfort, laxative use, hoarding food, anxiety, depression, unhealthy focus on body shape and weight, and frequent visit to bathroom before and after eating foods.

Binge Eating

The emotional and behavioral symptoms of binge eating are always eating alone, hiding empty food box, anxiety, hoarding food, depression, eating till they feel discomfort, eating more food, frequent dieting for weight loss, and feeling depressed over the amount of food consumed.

Eating disorder can affect people of any age. It is more prominent in children. As a parent or guardian, be careful in the eating pattern of children, as well as any emotional pressure that can trigger eating disorders.
